So.....Is Temptation Sin?

Hopefully you see the title of this post as a rhetorical question.

If I am attracted to, say, marijuana, but I don't smoke it, have I sinned?

If I am attracted to another woman, but don't act on that attraction, have I sinned?

I again hope you see those two questions as rhetorical.

But...

What if I am "attracted" to someone of the same sex as I?

Though it is not the first time I heard/read it, I was surprised to learn that Rosario Butterfield, who I deeply appreciate, considerers "same-sex-attraction" to be sin.

Huh?

I do not struggle with that "attraction," but I do think "attraction," in context, means the same thing as "temptation."

And temptation is not sin.

"No temptation has overtaken you but such is common to man, but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it." 1 Corinthians 10.13

"For since He Himself (the Lord Jesus) was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to help those who are tempted." Hebrews 2.18

"For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things like we are, yet without sin." Hebrews 4.15

So...Jesus was "tempted in all things." Is that the same as saying, "Jesus endured temptation in all things." Yeah, I think so.

Does "I am tempted to have sex with a man"" mean the same thing as "I am attracted to men"? Yeah, I think so.

"But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then, when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully matured, it brings forth death." James 1.14,15

Thankfully the Lord Jesus was not "carried away." Thankfully most of the time I am not "carried away." And I pray that anyone who suffers (and I believe that is the correct word) with "same sex attraction" is not "enticed by his own lust."

I can't imagine what it is like to deal with "same sex attraction." To add to that struggle by saying that "same sex attraction" in itself is sin is wrong.

When the Disciple's Prayer (too commonly referred to as the "Lord's Prayer" prays, "lead us not into temptation," I am confident temptation is not synonymous with sin, as I know the Lord will never "lead" me into sin.

What thinkest thou???
